Humble officials celebrate April groundbreaking for new senior activity center

The city of Humble held an April 26 groundbreaking ceremony for the city’s roughly $6.2 million senior activity center, which will be located at 1419 S. Houston Ave. next to the Humble Civic Center.

Humble Mayor Norman Funderburk, who said the project was projected to be completed by April 2024, thanked the more than three dozen seniors in attendance at the ceremony for their patience with the project.

Quote of note: “We talk a lot about that priority that's placed on our seniors, and that's a real thing. Through it all, we listened, because we do care, so thank you for your patience when you felt frustration. Thank you for your trust that's been shown,” Funderburk said.

The details: Humble City Manager Jason Stuebe noted several design elements that will be included in the new 10,200-square-foot senior activity center, including:

• a game room
• a library
• a full kitchen
• classrooms
• a multipurpose room

The backstory: Humble City Council first voted to demolish the city’s old senior activity center in September 2020. Last January, council members approved the selection of Brown Reynolds Watford Architects Inc. to provide architectural and engineering design services for the city's new senior activity center.

At its March 9 meeting, Humble City Council approved a contract with Humble-based company Purcell Construction to build the new facility.

Until the new senior activity center is completed, Stuebe said Humble seniors will continue to use space at the Humble Civic Center and the Phillip Cezeaux Recreation Building as they have since programming was reinstated in spring 2021.
