The district has begun planning for boundary modifications for the 2020-21 school year with the opening of two new schools.

At the June 17 board of trustees work study meeting, Katy ISD Chief Operations Officer Lee Crews and demographer Kris Pool from Population and Survey Analysts presented the recommendations for adjusting boundaries to accommodate Elementary School No. 43 and High School No. 9, which are opening in fall 2020.

Parents and other stakeholders will be able to complete a district survey regarding the proposed changes beginning June 18 through September, according to the presentation and press release.

The board is expected to vote on the boundary changes in October so families and students can prepare for transfers.

Under the recommended boundary changes, Elementary School No. 43—located at 6631 Greenwood Orchard Drive, Katy—would primarily relieve overcrowding at Bethke Elementary School. Students at Elementary School No. 43 would attend either Katy Junior High and Stockdick Junior High.

Meanwhile, High School No. 9—located at 27500 Fulshear Bend Drive. Fulshear—would primarily relieve overcrowding at Katy, Seven Lakes and Tompkins high schools under the recommended boundary changes. The proposed recommendation does include modifying existing boundaries, so some students attending an existing campus may be rezoned into another existing campus.

These students—enrolled 10th, 11th and 12th grade students during the 2020-21 school year—will be allowed to remain at their existing campuses, according to the district’s website. Additionally, students in 11th and 12th grades in the 2020-21 school year who are rezoned to High School No. 9 will also remain at their existing campus through graduation.

The district has budgeted to bus these students for two years, Crews said.

Ninth and 10th grade students during the 2020-21 school year who are rezoned to High School No. 9 will attend the new high school, per the presentation and district website.
