Committee on legislative priorities chartered by Katy ISD board of trustees

The Legislative Priorities Advisory Committee was approved and chartered by the Katy ISD board of trustees at its Sept. 26 meeting. Sergeant-at-Arms Henry Dibrell will serve as the committee chairman, while trustee George Scott will serve as an additional committee member.

The LPAC is a board subcommittee tasked with crafting the district’s legislative priorities heading into the next state legislative session, which begins in January.

Dibrell said legislative and community involvement is important to the board and the committee.

KISD hosted a Legislative Breakfast on Sept. 10, inviting local legislators to the district event to discuss their respective platforms. The district also conducted a community feedback survey from Sept. 20-Oct. 2 and hosted a town hall meeting Oct. 26.

The survey, which received more than 3,500 responses, indicated that Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills—or TEKS—standards, local control and voucher programs are most important to the Katy community.

“I think [the results] aligned with our community’s values,” Dibrell said. “I wasn’t really surprised.”

According to Maria Corrales, KISD’s manager of media relations and multimedia, the board is expected to take action Nov. 21 on the committee’s recommendations after the group deliberates in the coming months.
