Candidate Q&A

Dave Bennett
RepublicanCritical infrastructure/electrical engineer; small business owner; school board/HOA board member; lifelong learner.
Why are you running for this position?
During the last legislative session, I was in Austin and I saw that my Representative was not representing me. Many times he wasn’t even there. Our community needs someone that will find solutions to reduce crime and the cost of living and find funding for public school improvement initiatives.
What are the biggest challenges facing this district?
Crime is the biggest issue in HD149. We have the same felons that are praying on the victims of our small businesses and neighborhoods. In the words of one police officer that just quit “the system is broken, I can’t help”. He is working in another city now.
What will you do to support small businesses and promote economic growth in Texas?
One example: Small businesses and residents pay 178% more for their electricity than the mega businesses in Texas. This is the highest gap in the nation and we are an energy rich state! I helped pass a bill that will address this but it needs to have followup.
What projects are most important for the legislature to focus on for the future of Texas?
Common sense solutions for: Crime, we need to fix the broken judicial system in Houston. We need to stop the repeat felonies committed on our citizens. Cost of living, reduce taxes and electric bills for residents and small businesses. Fund improvement projects for public schools.

Darlene Breaux
DemocratSchool board trustee; Texas Association of School Boards leader; 30+ year District 149 resident; educator

Why are you running for this position?
My family has called District 149 home for more than 30 years. I'm running because our neighbors deserve a legislator who turns policy into action, not just promises. As a school board trustee and TASB leader, I've done the work, and I'll bring that same commitment to Austin.
What are the biggest challenges facing this district?
District 149 faces real challenges: underfunded public schools, rising housing costs and families worried about safety in their own neighborhoods. With nearly half our residents foreign-born, we also need leaders who treat every family with dignity. These aren't abstract issues, they shape whether our community can grow and thrive.
What will you do to support small businesses and promote economic growth in Texas?
Small businesses are the backbone of District 149. I'll push for infrastructure investment along our Main Street corridors, cut red tape for local entrepreneurs and support workforce training so businesses can hire locally. Growth in Texas should mean opportunity for the families who built this district.
What projects are most important for the legislature to focus on for the future of Texas?
Texas needs to invest in public schools, expand affordable housing protections and modernize aging infrastructure. I'll prioritize legislation like the Public Schools First Act and the Safe Apartments and Homestead Relief Act, along with fair power bills for families. These are the building blocks for a stronger, more equitable Texas.
