Statewide enrollment for a new virtual high school at Katy ISD is slated to open Feb. 2, district officials announced during a Jan. 30 news conference.

Legacy Virtual High School will be accepting applications for full-time students, as well as students who would like to take additional courses in addition to classes at their home campus, Principal Kelley Kirila said Jan. 30. The inaugural school year will welcome ninth- through 11th-grade students this summer, with the first class of 12th grade students to be accepted in the fall of 2027.
“School choice really does matter,” KISD Superintendent Ken Gregorski said. "Every child is different, and families deserve options that fit their needs, whether that's a traditional classroom, career-focused programs or virtual learning. We are eager to deliver on that promise here in KISD."

Courses will be free for full-time students, and taught by KISD-certified teachers, Kirila said. Supplemental courses will come with fees.
Students statewide can attend the virtual school by using their own devices or by purchasing a low-cost device through KISD, Kirila said. KISD students can use their district-issued devices or a personal device.
Student capacity for the virtual high school has not yet been determined and will depend on enrollment interest, Gregorski said.
How we got here
The decision to open Legacy Virtual High School comes in the wake of Senate Bill 569, Gregorski said. The bill was passed by Texas lawmakers last summer and allows Texas school districts to operate virtual schools, as previously reported by Community Impact.
What else?
The requirements for being accepted at Legacy Virtual High School will be no different than the requirements for attending another Texas high school, Gregorski said.
