Community Impact Newspaper contacted some of the several local businesses that contributed to relief efforts around Katy during and after Tropical Storm Harvey. What they offer: Jason Santarose opened the dojo, or practice hall, in 2011. He offers classes from beginner through advanced levels as well as sessions for teens and adults, sparring, home-schoolers and black belts. Regular memberships for taekwondo instruction are available for two classes per week or for unlimited classes. How they helped: As Santarose was watching news and social media Aug. 28, he realized that people needed a place to stay. He opened the dojo as a shelter for flood victims at about 7 p.m. that day, putting out a call on social media for donations of food and clothing. His students and other community members pitched in to feed more than 35 evacuees and collect 250 bags of clothing. “A lot of people from the community came in and helped out too; I didn’t even know some of them,” Santarose said. “The community just came in and helped out, and I thought that was cool.”
