The city of Katy may see multiple changes on the horizon this week as it discusses infrastructure improvements, zoning changes and Katy Mills Mall renovations. Networking opportunities and two Katy area business announcements are also among the six things Katy area residents should watch this week:

1. Katy City Council to debate zoning, drainage and grants

The governing body of Katy meets at 6:30 p.m. Monday evening at City Hall, 901 Avenue C, Katy. The agenda includes a public hearing on amending the city’s zoning ordinance to create the 25K Morton Park and Silver Oaks Estates planned development district. The development, if approved, will be located in the northwest corner of the intersection of Morton Road and Katy Hockley Cut Off Road, due south of Heritage Park West. The hearing will be the second one the council has held regarding changing the zoning for the project from all residential to mixed-use, residential and commercial. Other items on the agenda include approving a biking event and a running event slated for April 28, accepting a grant from the FIREHOUSE SUBS Public Safety Foundation and another grant from the Fort Bend County Fire Marshal's Office, authorization for Costello, Inc. to begin soliciting bids for drainage improvements to the Pine Forest Subdivision and an amendment to the city’s trash collection contract.

2. National Hispanic Professional Organization breakfast

Each Thursday, professionals from throughout the Katy area meet to network and find ways to help one another’s businesses grow. Coffee is free, but attendees must pay for their own food. 3. Upgrades coming to Katy Mills Mall

On March 8, representatives from Simon, the company that owns the mall, announced plans for a multimillion-dollar interior renovation project that will transform Katy Mills into a more modern and convenient shopping destination. “Katy Mills is a financial engine for the City of Katy, and we appreciate Simon investing in renovations and the reimaging of the mall,” Byron Hebert, City Administrator for the City of Katy said in a press release from Katy Mills. “The City of Katy is honored to be partnering with Simon to ensure Katy Mills continues to be successful into the future.” Read more about the renovation plans here.

4. Fort Bend County Commissioners Court approves Texas Heritage Parkway agreements

Commissioners approved agreements with several development companies and the cities of Fulshear and Katy on March 7 to construct Texas Heritage Parkway, a major north-south thoroughfare project. The county’s share is an estimated $13.3 million, which will be funded by bond proceeds and certificates of obligation, Precinct 3 Commissioner Andy Meyers said.
