New main lanes of the Tomball Tollway—the tolled portion of Hwy. 249—opened Dec. 19, Harris County Toll Road Authority officials announced.

The new lanes, Phase 2 of HCTRA's Hwy. 249 extension project, span from FM 2920 to Spring Creek in Tomball and connect to the Montgomery County Toll Road Authority's portion of the Hwy. 249 extension project. Frontage roads for Phase 2 opened to drivers in mid-2018.

To travel on the main lanes, drivers must pay tolls electronically via an EZ Tag, the EZ Tag Express mobile application or BancPass EZ Tag, which allows drivers to purchase the tag and reload it with cash at participating retailers, according to HCTRA information.

New tolled ramps are located south of Brown Road, south of Zion Road and just north of Spring Creek. Toll prices range from $0.50-$0.75 for two-axle vehicles on the tolled ramps. The ramps north of Spring Creek are operated by MCTRA.

HCTRA began construction on the $130 million Phase 2 of the Tomball Tollway in early 2017, Community Impact Newspaper previously reported.
