Harris County officials began discussions last fall to present voters with a bond referendum this year, which would fund flood mitigation projects.

However, the bond proposition to provide funding for the Harris County Flood Control District will not be on ballots this May. Commissioners said they need additional time to prepare the details of the package before putting it before taxpayers. Details of the package, including how big it would be, are still being discussed, Harris County officials said.

However, county officials previously said even a conservative estimate for how much the county needs to address flooding issues would exceed $1 billion. The bond would be funded by an increase in property taxes. Funds would likely be spent on home buyouts, improved water conveyance along area bayous and construction of a third reservoir along Cypress Creek.

To place the bond referendum on the Nov. 6 ballot, commissioners must vote to do so by Aug. 20.
