Here are six things to know this week if you live in the Greater Tomball and Magnolia areas:

1. Tomball City Council will hold a regular meeting at 6 p.m. tonight, in City Hall. The council will hold a second public hearing on the proposed property tax rate of $0.3415 per $100 valuation for fiscal year 2016-2017. Annexation and the creation of Harris County Improvement District No. 17 are also on the agenda.

2. Tomball and Magnolia police departments host family-friendly community events from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 4, to celebrate National Night Out.

The Tomball event will take place at the Tomball Historic Depot Plaza, located at 201 S. Elm St., and features food, activities, games, interactive displays, demonstrations and a bounce house. Guests can also view Tomball First Responder equipment, such as police cars, fire trucks, the GYRO plane and skywatch towers.

The Magnolia event will take place in Unity Park, located at 19100 Unity Park Drive, and features food, games, a meet-and-greet with law enforcement and emergency personnel, first responder displays and simulators. Guests can learn about crime prevention, traffic safety and drug awareness.

3. The 2016-17 fiscal year began on Oct. 1 for both cities. As a result, new projects, employee pay increases and property tax rates now take effect. Find highlights of the Tomball and Magnolia city budgets here.

4. The Texas Renaissance Festival begins this weekend, Oct. 8-9, in Todd Mission. The 42nd annual festival features live entertainment, 400 vendors, costumes, turkey legs, contests, campgrounds and an evening gala. Here are 10 things to do at RenFest during one or all of its eight weekends this fall.
