Unused or expired prescription medications and controlled substances can now be safely disposed using a newly installed drug collection and disposal receptacle located at the Magnolia Police Department, according to a MPD press release Aug. 28.

In partnership with medical waste pickup service provider Sharps Compliance Inc., the police department is now providing a safe, anonymous way to dispose of unused drugs, such as opioid painkillers, in an effort to curtail prescription drug abuse.

"Most Americans recognize that prescription drug abuse is a growing problem and one that flourishes in all communities," officials said in the statement. "We are happy to be able to give back to our community by providing a safe solution to getting unused medications out of their homes and harm's way."

Unused or expired drugs can be dropped into the Sharps Compliance MedSafe receptacle located in the MPD lobby at 18111 Buddy Riley Blvd., Magnolia. Illegal drugs and other hazardous materials, such as sharp containers or chemicals, are not able to be disposed of via the receptacle.
