The city of Tomball’s fiscal year 2022-23 proposed budget includes adding 27.5 new positions to address department and infrastructure needs as the city grows, City Manager David Esquivel said during the Tomball City Council budget workshop July 18.

The city’s budget would add 6.5 new positions to the police department and as school resource officers in Tomball ISD, nine positions to the fire department, 10 positions to public works, one position to utility billing, and one position in engineering and planning, Esquivel said.

The positions for the police and TISD would be funded by the general fund and a contract with TISD to provide school security. The new fire department positions would be funded via a contract with Harris County Emergency Services District No. 15 to staff the new Station No. 4, which broke ground in late June. Six of the public works positions would be funded through the general fund and four through the enterprise fund. The utility billing position would be funded via the enterprise fund, and the engineering and planning position would be through the general fund, according to Esquivel.

The police department additions are two patrol officers, two jailers to help with coverage for all shifts, two part-time bailiffs and additional school resource officers, according to Esquivel. Assistant City Manager Jessica Rogers said the city cannot disclose the number of school resource officers being added for security reasons.

There will be another budget workshop Aug. 1 at City Hall, 401 Market St.
