In a special teleconference meeting May 22, Magnolia City Council voted to take over the utility fees for 68 streetlights and two lift stations in the Magnolia Ridge community, City Administrator Don Doering said.

“They are pretty well public use now anyways, so the city approved taking over financial responsibility,” he said.

The city was able to add the utilities into its contract at a lower rate than what the Magnolia Ridge Homeowners Association was previously paying, Doering said.

“We extended our contract with Brilliant Energy LLC [for another five years],” he said.

Doering said this will save taxpayers money and have the city take over services for which it should have already been paying.

“The roads already belong to the city, so there is no reason why the streetlights and lift station shouldn’t also,” he said.
