The Lone Star College-Tomball campus hosted a grand opening and ribbon-cutting event Sept. 6 to celebrate the opening of its new Career and Transfers Connections Office.

What you need to know

During the celebration several academic advisers and staff spoke, sharing the goal of the new office. The Career and Transfers Connections Office's goal is to support students beyond their community college journey, whether that includes preparing students to transfer to a four-year university or transition into the workforce. These are the services that will be available at the new office:
  • Career assessment and exploration
  • Long-term career advising
  • Employer-aligned workforce guidance
  • Transfer pathway instructional services
  • Assistance with goal planning
How we got here

According to a news release Aug. 23, funding for the creation of the Career and Transfers Connection Office came from the U.S. Department of Education's $1.5 million Strengthening Institutions Program grant received in 2021.
  • Funds were available to use for faculty development, joint use of instructional facilities, student service programs or establishing endowment funds.
  • The program is used to help campuses expand their capacity to serve low-income students.
  • The Career and Transfers Connection Office combined five different transfer and career services into one building.
What they're saying

"Relationships are fundamental to anything that we do, and for that reason we wanted to really express what is it that we are doing here, and most basic, we are trying to build that network," said Sarah Ho, director of academic, career and transfer advising at LSC-Tomball. "Build that network for our students; build that network for our employees; and build that network for our four-year university partners as well as our employers. For that reason, you see connections in that name of what we are trying to do day in and day out."
