The Magnolia ISD board of trustees unanimously voted to hire JD Berna, head football coach for Magnolia West High School, as the district’s new athletic director during the board’s Feb. 11 meeting. Berna replaces former athletic director Mike Spradlin, who was named the head football coach of Rockwall-Heath High School, located in Rockwall, Texas, in January.

Berna has served as the head football coach for Magnolia West High School since 2016 and was named District 20-5A coach of the year in 2017, according to a MISD news release. He had a winning record of 25-9 in his three years at Magnolia West, bringing the team to be bi-district finalists each year and district champions in 2017, according to the release.

“I am honored to have this opportunity to continue to work towards being the best district in the state,” Berna said in a statement. “I am excited about being able to work alongside the staff and the young men and women in the district to develop well-rounded athletes and athletic programs.”
