Magnolia ISD campuses and the Magnolia community collected $42,000 from mid-September to mid-October for Hurricane Harvey relief, according to MISD Communications Director Denise Meyers. MISD launched a partnership in September with Little Cypress-Mauriceville CISD, located in Orange, Texas, to help the district recover from severe flood damage caused by Hurricane Harvey.
MISD recognized LCMCISD officials at the Magnolia Bowl—a football game between Magnolia West and Magnolia high schools—on Oct. 20. Funds were raised via ticket sales from the rivalry game, donations from local businesses and other donations and sales at MISD campuses.
“As a district and community, we teach our students about service and pride ourselves on developing well-rounded civic-minded students,” MISD Superintendent Todd Stephens said. “This is a great moment for us to model what we teach and believe.”
MISD is working to collect a total of $50,000 to provide band instruments, athletic uniforms and other student equipment for LCMCISD. Four of the district’s six campuses sustained major damage, forcing students to meet in a nearby church and at the high school this fall, according to a statement from MISD.
Meyers said fundraising efforts for LCMCISD will continue through November at MISD campuses and local businesses.
