Owners Martha Gámez and sisters Blanca and Karina Luna became friends five years ago while working as waitresses at a Mexican restaurant in Spring, Gámez said in Spanish. That friendship later grew into a business partnership after the three waitresses became restaurateurs of Martha’s Mexican Restaurant & Grill in Tomball.

“[Karina] is the one who is totally calm; [Blanca] is the balance, and I think I am the most rapturous. ... I always have to be looking for what to do next,” Gámez said. “One has what the other doesn’t.”

Martha’s opened on Alma Street in April 2020.

In addition to a full bar, Martha’s offers a variety of Tex-Mex dishes, such as the Pollo Mira Mar, grilled chicken breast served with sauteed shrimp and ranchero sauce; Martha’s Fajitas, beef or chicken fajitas served with mushrooms and a specialty sauce; and the shrimp brochetas, grilled, bacon-wrapped shrimp stuffed with cheese and jalapeno.

Chef Wilmer Guevara, who is also Blanca’s husband, said in Spanish the restaurant specializes in cooking its food on the grill.

When opening amid the coronavirus pandemic, the restaurant had to operate amid dine-in and capacity restrictions. However, the restaurant is now able to operate at full capacity since state orders were lifted in mid-March.••Despite these challenges, Blanca said in Spanish the business was still able to gain a large crowd of customers from word of mouth.

“Thank God we have done well,” Blanca said. “To begin with, when we opened with the whole virus—as far as advertising, we didn’t have those things. Everything is because the people who come, recommend [the restaurant to] their friends and neighbors.”

Gámez said support came from being featured in Facebook foodie groups as well.

In addition to new customers, past customers of the three waitresses now frequent the new restaurant. Gámez said customers come from as far as Spring and Humble.

“When you get to know them and have served them for a while, you gain appreciation [for them],” Karina said in Spanish. “We are happy when they come all the way out here to eat.”

In addition to food and catering services, Martha’s also offers an event hall; however, because the business has not been able to use the space during the pandemic, the three owners said they hope to expand their restaurant into the space.

“We’re going little by little, but that’s the idea,” Blanca said.

Gámez said she looks forward to continuing to offer quality customer service.

“I believe that what matters most to us is that our clients leave happy,” she said.
