1. Prior to the regularly scheduled Tomball City Council meeting, council member and staff held the first budget workshop for the 2017-18 fiscal year. Budget items to note include a proposed 3 percent salary increase for city employees, three additional staff members for the city's services departments and funding for sidewalks and capital project improvements, such as Broussard Park and water and sewer improvements.

Additional budget hearings are scheduled for July 5 and 17 as needed. Next month, the council is expected to discuss items not included in the first draft of the budget, including potential funding to tear down and possibly rebuild the original Tomball City Hall.

2. Tomball City Council adopted, on first reading, an ordinance to approve a zoning request for a proposed wedding and reception venue to be located on the north side of east Hufsmith Road near Lovett Street. According to owner Michal Hogan, the venue is expected to feature a 10,000-square-foot barn and a chapel and will have capacity for 300 guests. The council will vote on the ordinance following a second reading July 5.

3. The council also adopted, on first reading, a zoning request for a proposed new neighborhood located between Theiss Lane and Holderrieth Road, adjacent to Hwy. 249. The proposed neighborhood features a site plan for 375 homes with varying home sizes. Although there were concerns from council about additional development in an area already experiencing frequent flooding, city staff said the M118 drainage channel, slated for construction south of Holderrieth Road, will be complete before substantial home construction begins.

4. The council approved two interlocal agreements with area schools to provide six student resource officers at Tomball ISD schools and Concordia Lutheran High School.

5. The city council and staff heard annual reports from the Tomball Economic Development Corporation ahead of its annual luncheon this Thursday. Executive Director Kelly Violette said in the past year projects secured by the the TEDC have brought an additional 172 new jobs to the area and an economic impact of $30.9 million.
