The city has budgeted $20,000 to complete the renovations, which are expected to total under budget upon completion, Tomball City Secretary Doris Speer said. Most of the changes to the council chambers are cosmetic and will not require major construction, Speer said. Since renovations began June 3, the existing wood paneling lining the walls has been covered with one-fourth inch of sheetrock and was painted a cream color, she said. The wood paneling was part of the building’s original design when it was built in the 1970s. Matching crown molding, baseboards and chair railings have also been installed. The City Council dais will be relaminated to cover chips and scratches in the paint, and carpeting will be replaced throughout the building, Speer said. “The carpet we currently have is 18 years old,” she said. “It was time to replace it several years ago.” City Hall will remain open during the renovations, and staff will continue to work in the building until the renovations are complete, Speer said. However, City Council meetings and other public events will be held in the Public Works Building at 501 James St. until the carpet installation is finished in late July. “[The renovations are] not going to be a huge change, but it will be fresher and brighter,” Speer said. “I think people will like it.”
