“Everyone in my family is an entrepreneur,” Stevens said. “So I’ve been wanting to start a business in our community since I was a teenager, and this sort of fell into my lap.”
Originally used as more of a makerspace, Stevens said she transformed a previously unrentable building into a creative rental space for teachers.
The Studio has grown to host three different professors offering multiple classes and art mediums, which are open to all ages, including children and adults, with registration.
Teachers at the space include Linda Marie, also an art teacher at Extraordinary Education in Magnolia, who teaches drawing, painting, art history, art studio, ceramics and animation; Anna Chasovskaia, an instructor at The Glassell Junior School of Arts and the owner of a fashion brand, who teaches fashion design at The Studio; and Stevens.
Stevens said she has been teaching art since she was 17. She said she started her first artist summer camp called Camp Craft in 2015 in her parents’ backyard. With 10 years as a private art teacher, Stevens said she has worked with many mediums, including prints, candles, oil, felt, stained glass and embroidery.
Her love for art started from watching her great-grandmother, Faye Plank, who was a traveling artist and journalist, Stevens said.
“She got to go all over the world to write articles, take pictures and do art pieces,” Stevens said. “I was super inspired by that growing up, and she convinced my mom to get me art lessons when I was 15. That’s how it all started.”
Looking forward, Stevens said she wants to expand The Studio’s reach by partnering with the local school districts, hosting more events and inspiring more creative minds.
“I’ve always said I believe that we were created to be creative by a creative God,” she said. “It’s what I’m supposed to do, and now I get to watch other kids fall in love with it, too.”
