Since opening in September 2012, Birds of a Feather has had customers and visitors flocking to Tomball’s Main Street to browse the store’s aisles for the next big statement piece for their home or wardrobes.

A veteran of the fashion and entertainment industries, owner Francesca Garcia worked in design, costuming and retail for years before moving her business from Old Town Spring to Tomball.

“I chose Tomball because I had heard from a neighbor that Tomball was the up-and-coming [area],” Garcia said. “I wanted the quaint feel of a town so that’s why I moved here.”

Birds of a Feather carries not only antiques, but also home decor, toys, clothing and jewelry, she said.

“I like to have an eclectic mix of merchandise because I want to make sure that when a customer walks in, they get an array of looks,” she said. ‘I want [people] to take their time and stroll through the store. We change [the look] up weekly so when you come in here the next time, it’ll look different.”

Garcia said she works with 12-15 vendors and travels to markets around the U.S. to keep the store stocked with new items. Aside from helping other women build their businesses by selling their goods in the store, she said having vendors in the store helps to keep the supply of merchandise fresh and interesting for regular customers.

“I’m always looking for the next best thing because I want to bring the next innovative piece of furniture, product [or] clothing to Tomball,” she said. “I want [the store] to be different. There are a lot of people selling clothes out there, so when I go to market I think, ‘Is this different? Am I just going to be another retailer out there, or am I going to be different?’”
