In an age when convenience is king, Magnolia Pharmacy owner Steve Hoffart said customer service, specialized medicine and old-school touches help his business stand out.

“What makes us [unique] is our customer service, our patient orientation,” Hoffart said. “When I first opened the store, I always kind of made a joke, ‘If we take care of our patients, as a side effect I’ll make a living.’”

Although owning an independent pharmacy has become increasingly challenging due to heightened corporate competition and changes in health insurance, Hoffart said the pharmacy’s focus on the customer is unchanged since its opening in 2002.

Magnolia Pharmacy, located in the Magnolia Landmark Building on FM 1488, offers health and nutrition-related consultations and pharmaceutical-grade supplements in addition to traditional retail pharmacy services. The pharmacy also offers note cards, orthopedic braces, a children’s waiting area and an ice cream sundae bar for an added cost, reminiscent of a pharmacy from yesteryear.

Additionally, Hoffart said Magnolia Pharmacy is able to offer customized care via its accredited compounding lab—a service in which medications are customized for the needs of each patient. Compounding is not typically offered by larger chain pharmacies because of its cost and complexity, Hoffart said.

“Sometimes people have a lot of pains, [so] we can do topical pain-type things so they don’t have all the nasty side effects of taking something by mouth,” he said.

To add a personal touch, Hoffart said his staff regularly call patients to follow up on prescriptions. For patients with multiple prescriptions, Hoffart said the pharmacy works to synchronize refill dates to minimize the number of trips a patient makes to the pharmacy.

“It’s all the little things that add up to be a major advantage in terms of taking care of patients and making that impact on their lives,” Hoffart said.
