Combining their passions for metal art and photography, Shannon Hudkins and Robann Roberts opened Steel Magnolia Metal Art Printing in November along FM 1488. The duo started the business after their youngest children began attending college.
“We’re just two besties running a business,” Hudkins said.

The business offers lightweight metal prints of photographs, logos and other graphic designs in custom-cut sizes.
“Until you see it yourself, it’s hard to explain what it actually is,” Roberts said.
Customers can choose from four types of metal onto which the image is pressed. The metal type determines the degree to which the finished print is glossy. To make metal art, a digital image is printed and burned into a sheet of aluminum—a process that takes place off-site at Steel Magnolia’s printing shop, Roberts said.
Most photos can be made into a metal print in seven to 10 days, she said.
“You can buy anything off our walls [in the gallery], or you can put your own artwork or own pictures [onto metal],” Hudkins said. “It’s not an impulse buy. We know it’s a luxury item.”
Hudkins said metal art is preferable to printing on canvas or paper mediums as metal art photos do not fade, rust or collect dust and can easily be cleaned.
“You can use it in places that traditional artwork is not usable [like outdoor areas],” Roberts said.
Smaller gift items, such as coasters and magnets, can also be custom-made, Roberts said.
“That’s probably the big benefit is that you’ve got one-on-one customer service when you come here,” she said.
