Montgomery County began the bidding process Dec. 15 for the Birnham Woods Drive widening project from Waterbend Cove to Rayford Road. The project will widen the road from two to four lanes. Precinct 3 officials said the contract will be for 420 calendar days.

The contract was awarded during a Commissioners Court meeting Jan. 11. Precinct 3 officials said it is expected to begin work in early 2022.

When completed, the road will consist of two lanes plus a left-turn lane in each direction on Birnham Woods at the intersections with Waterbend Cove and Lexington Boulevard.

The project is expected to be completed in mid-2023, and a cost for the project had not yet been determined as of late 2021, according to Precinct 3.

Construction is also wrapping on a project to widen portions of Birnham Woods north and south of Rayford Road as well as installing traffic lights at four locations on Rayford where four-way stops previously existed, officials said in December.

The Rayford project began in October 2020 and was scheduled for completion in late 2021 at a cost of $2.88 million, according to Precinct 3.
