Oak Ridge North City Council unanimously approved a Union Pacific Railroad letter agreement to move forward with intersection improvements at Robinson Road and Hanna Road at Monday night’s council meeting.

Joe Sherwin, director of public works and engineering, said the city will also pay a $20,000 review fee to Union Pacific Railroad once plans are finalized.

"The letter says that city and railroad agree to everything that is included in the plans," Sherwin said. "Right now we don’t have plans, so the letter just has a reference that when plans are finalized, then everything else has been agreed upon. Then we will agree to pay $20,000 for the review and the railroad will do everything that is required by the railroad to make the intersection compliant."

Sherwin said that while the fee can be paid anytime since it is budgeted in the city's capital improvement fund, the city will wait to pay it until plans for the intersection are finalized. It has not been determined when plans will be finished or when improvements to the intersection will begin.
