According to an Oct. 29 news release, the 24th annual "In The Pink of Health" fundraiser luncheon raised $800,000 for the study of breast and ovarian cancers in women. The luncheon took place Oct. 25 at The Woodlands Waterway Marriott.
Why it matters
Founded in 2001, In The Pink of Health is a nonprofit organization sponsored by Memorial Hermann which raises funds to purchase technology and launch awareness initiatives of primarily female cancers. The nonprofit also works to provide support for those undergoing treatment and in remission for breast and ovarian cancer by providing breast protheses and wigs, according to the organization's news release.
According to the news release, the nonprofit has raised just over $8.6 million for breast and ovarian cancer awareness since 2001.
"These funds support state-of-the-art technology, breast and ovarian cancer awareness initiatives, unlimited free mammograms, free wigs, and breast prostheses, and funding for Canopy; the Cancer Survivorship Center at Memorial Hermann The Woodlands," the release stated.
The details
The event featured a number of speakers, including cancer survivors and treatment specialists as well as a speech from two-time gymnastics Olympian Shannon Miller.
“There’s a certain beauty in the cancer community that can’t be appreciated until you’re actually in it. Weirdly, I feel privileged to be part of it, both as one who heals and one who needs healing," said Christine Lee, a gynecologic oncologist with Memorial Hermann and cancer survivor, during the event.
