Montgomery County commissioners authorized the renaming of the incoming South Montgomery County Library and Community Center to honor longtime former congressman Kevin Brady.

Some context

As previously reported by Community Impact, the new $16.5 million community center and library is being funded by Howard Hughes and will be located in the Grogan's Mill Village Center as part of a revitalization effort for the shopping center. The center is set to be 48,000 square feet with a number of rentable rooms ranging from a ballroom to study rooms. It will include:
  • A 5,000-square-foot ballroom
  • 11 rentable study rooms
  • A full-service conference room
  • 100-person capacity theater-style classroom
  • A rentable podcast room
  • A film-producing room
The library was previously named the "Heroes of Montgomery County Library" on Nov. 5 by James Noack, the previous Precinct 3 commissioner. However, current Precinct 3 Commissioner Ritch Wheeler formed a library naming committee to review the name for the new library and community center in January, which led to the selection of the new name: Kevin Brady Library and Community Center.

Quotes of note
  • "To say that [Kevin Brady] represents Montgomery County is an understatement; and more specifically, South Montgomery County," Wheeler said. "We were very intentional about 'If George Mitchell is the most influential person in the history of South Montgomery County, who is the second most important?' Obviously Cynthia Woods-Mitchell is right there with George Mitchell, and she has the pavilion named after her. So we kept coming back time and time again to the name Kevin Brady."
  • “We are excited to collaborate with Montgomery County on revitalizing this important gathering place for our community,” said Jim Carman, president of the Houston Region at Howard Hughes. “The new name honors Congressman Brady’s years of dedicated service—not only at the local, state, and national level but also to The Woodlands community. The revitalization of the Grogan’s Mill Village Center is a key initiative that benefits all stakeholders, ensuring it remains a vibrant destination for generations to come.”
The action taken

Brady's wife, Cathy Brady, accepted the designation on behalf of Kevin Brady, who was not able to attend the Montgomery County Commissioners Court meeting on March 25 due to a scheduling conflict. Wheeler also said one of the library rooms would be dedicated to Cathy Brady once the building is completed.

The new library and community center will honor the work done by Kevin Brady, who represented the Texas 8th Congressional District from 1997 until 2023. During his time in Congress, Brady became the chair of the House Ways and Means Committee from 2015-19. Prior to his terms in the U.S. House, Brady also served as a state representative for Texas House District 15, serving The Woodlands area from 1991-97. Brady is also a lifetime member of The Woodlands Area Chamber of Commerce and worked with a number of chambers of commerce for 18 years before running for public office.
