Two-minute impact
Montgomery County Sheriff Wesley Doolittle presented plans for the bed expansion to the commission on Feb. 6 alongside other law enforcement officials.
The plan would use existing jail space as bed space for inmates. Doolittle said the new improvements will not require major construction and will be funded through the sheriff's budget.
According to reports from TCJS, the Montgomery County Jail has a maximum capacity of 1,253 inmates. As of press time, there are 1,271 inmates booked into the jail, according to live data maintained by the sheriff’s office.

Work on the expansion project is set to begin immediately; however, Doolittle said that the growing population countywide has continued to increase the demand on sheriff’s office facilities.
“This expansion is a proactive approach to dealing with growth, maintaining high standards of safety and security, and ensuring that justice is served. We will continue to explore innovative solutions to protect our community,” Doolittle said.
