Cindy Heiser, a member of The Woodlands Township board of directors, on Sept. 19 announced the artist selections for the community's 50th anniversary mural ahead of celebrations in October.

The details

The mural, which will be paid for by the Howard Hughes Corporation, will be painted by Houston-based artist Amy Malkan and The Woodlands-based artist Marlo Saucedo. Malkan and Sauceda were selected following a review of 40 submissions from local artists by a panel of community leaders.

Heiser said the name of the mural will be "The Beauty of Nature in The Woodlands," and it will focus on the role of nature in the growth of the area. The mural will be located near the South Plaza of the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion underneath the Millennium sculpture.

Quote of note

"Amy has over 70 public art pieces across the Houston area and Marlo has artwork displayed across the Houston area including our 'Tokens of Gratitude' art bench," Heiser said. "The ladies have been wonderful to work with and will host a community painting event on Sept. 28 to allow student artists to participate in the mural."
