Shenandoah City Council agreed to seek around $123,000 in additional funding from the city’s municipal development district for the construction of Holly Hill Park during a Sept. 22 meeting.
The new initial total estimated cost for the project is around $373,266, and $250,000 has been budgeted so far. The original cost estimate for the project was $438,674.
Shenandoah Public Works Director Joseph Peart said the park is largely completed with planning, but inflation and rising material costs have been a factor for the increase as well as planting trees for the walking trail proposed for the park.
Peart said city staff has been able to cut around $60,000 from the total cost so far.
Peart said the plan is to get the park done in completion but it could be phased out if needed.
“It could be broken up, but I think in the end you will be paying more if we go that route,” he said.
Council Member Mike McCleod said he wants to see the project completed and is in favor of sending the request to the district.“This is something our residents want,” McCleod said.
Discussions regarding the park have been ongoing since late 2019.
