The Woodlands Water Agency has announced that an 18-month project to install smart meters for around 34,000 businesses and residents will begin the week of Aug. 24.

According to a press release from The Woodlands Water Agency, the free upgrade will enable customers to better control and understand water usage and monthly bills.

"This project is a five-year effort by our [Municipal Utility Districts] to optimize operations and enhance customer service,” Woodlands Water General Manager James M. Stinson said in the release. “We also strive to make the meter upgrade process convenient for our customers.”

According to the release, the new meters provide daily and hourly water use information along with current monthly information. Customers can elect to receive text message, email, or phone call alerts if water usage indicates potential leaks or abnormal usage.

The project will be led by contractor Ameresco Inc. Installation contractors will need access to meters behind fences but will not enter homes. Installation will require about 30 minutes per meter. Water service will be affected for about 15 minutes for most customers.

The press release states door hangers will be placed in neighborhoods three to five days before installation crews arrive. Additional information on the project can be found here.
