For the past 12 years, Gayla Wigs has restored confidence in men and women of all ages who suffer from hair loss in The Woodlands.

Owner and founder Gayle Stan-Bucher opened Gayla Wigs in 2004 inside a medical facility in The Woodlands. Having suffered from male pattern baldness herself, Stan-Bucher is passionate about finding a solution for hair loss.

“It’s more than just hair; it’s about our mission statement: to create beauty in women, to nurture self-esteem and maintain an environment of growth and unlimited potential to all whom we serve,” Stan-Bucher said. “Every woman comes in here with a story—her story—stories of breast cancer, ovarian cancer, lung cancer, brain cancer … We hear it all.”

She said roughly 80 percent of clients who come to Gayla Wigs are there because cancer treatments have resulted in hair loss. The shop provides free consultations and has individual fitting rooms.

“The hardest part is when we shave their head to get the wig to fit [clients]properly once they’re losing their hair in handfuls,” wig-fitter and cosmetologist Denella McCormick said. “We have private fitting rooms; that way their family can be in there with them. It’s a very intimate and emotional time for them.”

In 2010, Gayla Wigs relocated to Oak Ridge North where patrons can find hundreds of different color blends of monofilament wigs that give the illusion of a real scalp. Clients have a choice of human hair, synthetic hair or a blend of both.

“Our staff here is trained to help fit and make each client beautiful—whatever that entails,” Stan-Bucher said. “Our service here is by far the best in the country, and the girls really care.”

The owner said her staff strives to match each client’s wig to his or her natural hair by choosing a compatible color and cutting and styling the wig.

“It’s very rewarding to do something I love while listening to someone’s story and helping them feel better about what they’re going through,” McCormick said.
