Celebrations for the 50th anniversary of The Woodlands community culminate in mid-October with a string of events including a free concert and a night of fireworks. Before the public events, several other dedications are taking place to mark the community's dedication to conservation, its spirit of giving and commitment to the arts.

The big picture

A week of festivities is scheduled to kick off with the dedication of a time capsule on Oct. 14 at Hughes Landing, according to development company Howard Hughes, which is coordinating events with The Woodlands Township.

While Oct. 15 was designated as a communitywide Day of Giving, efforts for local nonprofits to partner with volunteers from the community are set to continue throughout the year, officials said. Interfaith of The Woodlands is seeking volunteers throughout the month to help with several programs, including its Hand Me Up Shop, Veggie Village Community Garden and Interfaith Food Pantry.

The Interfaith campaign to provide 50,000 pounds of donated food launches during the Day of Giving, but those efforts continue through December, officials said.

Another thing

The week of anniversary celebrations continues on Oct. 16 with a tree dedication at Northshore Park, where a hardwood tree is scheduled to be planted. Each village in The Woodlands will also see a 100-gallon tree planted as part of this event.

A mural titled “The Beauty of Nature in The Woodlands” features artists Marlo Saucedo and Amy Malkan, who were selected from approximately 40 applicants responding to an open call from The Woodlands Arts Council. The artists were assisted by students from The Woodlands High School and College Park High School. The mural will be unveiled Oct. 17.

What's next

Rounding out the celebrations, a set of events is offered to the community for free.

On Oct. 18, The Woodlands natives Hayes Carll and Jack Ingram are the opening acts for a concert by Lyle Lovett, who also hails from the area. Howard Hughes is presenting the event.

The annual Wildflower Festival hosted by The Woodlands Lions Club is scheduled for the afternoon of Oct. 19, providing free wildflower seeds as well as family activities.

The finale is on the evening of Oct. 19, when Northshore Park and Hughes Landing host a drone show and fireworks produced by The Woodlands Township and presented by Woodforest National Bank and Waste Connections. Events will take place both at Northshore Park and the Hughes Landing Band Shell in Hughes Landing, but fireworks viewing is recommended at Northshore Park. All events are free to the public, but concert attendees must register for tickets.
