“John loved being a part of the community and caring for the education of the children within his community,” his family said in his obituary. “This was a job that he took very seriously and with the sincerest of dedication and responsibility.”

Neubauer was born in 1945 in Houston County and was the son of a farmer and an elementary teacher, according to his obituary. He graduated salutatorian from Lovelady High School where he lettered in football, basketball and track, and served as the president of the FFA class.
He then went on to get his bachelor’s degree in education from Sam Houston State University in 1967, which was followed by a master’s degree in education in 1975. Neubauer received his superintendent’s certification in 1999, according to his obituary.
Neubauer’s career at TISD began as a geography teacher and coach before he transitioned to administrative roles, including junior high assistant principal, high school assistant principal, high school principal, assistant superintendent and then superintendent, according to his obituary. He served as TISD superintendent for 16 years.
In a Nov. 20 statement, TISD officials mourned the loss of Neubauer.
“His dedication to serving Tomball ISD was unmatched, and our district is better because of his 46 years of service to the district,” TISD officials said. “His impact on children as both a classroom teacher, campus administrator and as a superintendent played a pivotal role in shaping the lives of our generation, and he made tremendous strides in making Tomball into what it is today.”
Neubauer also founded the Tomball Scholarship Foundation, according to the obituary. The nonprofit, started in 1994, provides scholarships to students within the TISD community.

Neubauer’s hobbies included a love of the outdoors through activities such as fishing and gardening. He also enjoyed ranching, woodworking and spending time with his family, according to his obituary.
