Lone Star College System’s board of trustees discussed updates to a bill during a regular board meeting Thursday that would allow LSC-Montgomery to offer a four-year nursing program to students.

LSCS Chancellor Steve Head reported that Senate Bill 2118, which would allow LSCS to offer a baccalaureate nursing program if signed into law, was passed by the Senate and has been received by the House as of Wednesday. The bill is authored by state Sen. Kel Seliger, R-Amarillo.

“We’re optimistic that before it’s over with, we’d be one of the colleges that’s eligible to offer bachelors degrees,” Head said.

Head also announced that LSCS will have a record-breaking 7,983 students graduate with a degree or certificate systemwide this month. This is 13.5 percent increase from last year. LSC-North Harris will graduate the most with 2,092 graduates, and LSC-CyFair comes in second with 2,058 students.

Graduation ceremonies will take place May 12-13.
