In 2016, Joe Arbeely opened On the Kirb to bring a health-focused bar and restaurant concept to South Houston.

With a focus on organic ingredients as well as drinks made with natural sweeteners and other alternative ingredients, Arbeely said his mission is to provide healthier options to Houston communities.

Since the opening of the first On the Kirb, located on Kirby Road, Arbeely expanded with four additional locations located in Midtown, Katy, Greenway and the new The Woodlands location that opened in November.

It’s 5 o’clock somewhere

Like its other locations, The Woodlands location offers a traditional sports bar scene with multiple television screens and a patio.

Although the restaurant doesn't exclusively offer healthy dining and drink options, Arbeely said On the Kirb offers a healthier approach to the traditional bar scene.

On the Kirb offers organic wines, organic beers, low-additive tequila and drinks made with natural sweeteners like sugar cane and agave syrup as an alternative to refined sugar. In addition, the bar offers mocktails for those who wish to refrain from alcohol altogether.

Signature cocktails offered at the bar include:
  • God Gave Me Mule made with Grey Goose, ginger liqueur, organic cane syrup, fresh lime juice, mint and ginger beer
  • Brojito made with Bacardi rum, Bacardi coconut, mint, blackberries, organic cane sugar, and fresh lime juice
  • Hibiscus margarita made with Patron Reposado tequila, hibiscus-infused cane syrup, and fresh lime juice
Must-try menu items

With organic meats sourced from New Zealand and bar appetizers fried in beef tallow—as well as soy for vegan options—On the Kirb offers a variety of bar food staples such as truffle fries, organic wings and burgers.

A popular menu item is organic kabobs made with grass-fed beef or organic chicken and served on a bed of house-made hummus with steamed broccoli and a Greek salad, he said.

In addition, On the Kirb offers 12 types of pizza, including a build-your-own option with dough made with flour imported from Naples, Italy, which is made with fewer additives than American flour and is easier to digest, Arbeely said.

The eatery also offers several vegan and vegetarian options coded with icons on the menu for those with dietary restrictions. Arbeely said On the Kirb has plans to expand its menu with more healthy options early this year.
