Since he was young, Steve Said’s father, a refugee from the Middle East, had to build his life from the ground up.

“As a kid, I was preached morning, noon and night—seek and grab those opportunities because you will never know when one is going to come around again,” Said said. “So that’s kind of how all of this has happened.”

Over 15 years ago, Said opened the Dosey Doe Big Barn with the intention of making it into a coffee business.

“The barn was just going to be a cool-looking coffeehouse,” he said. “I realized that the barn could be a great place for music. So it wasn’t until the barn was going up that we created a space for music.”

In addition to the barn, Said opened Dosey Doe Breakfast, BBQ and Whiskey Bar in 2019 as well as Dosey Doe Coffee in Alden Bridge.

Speakeasy opens

In October, the restaurant opened its new speakeasy section, hidden behind the bar at Dosey Doe Breakfast, BBQ and Whiskey Bar.

“When you come up to the door, it’s not going to open. There’s nobody there to let you in unless you know where to go,” Said said.

The speakeasy was designed to reflect an accurate Prohibition-era speakeasy with artwork and furniture from the 1930s. Said said the private room is ideal for romantic dinners and business events. The larger adjoining space can be used for events such as weddings and corporate training.

The idea for the speakeasy came after Said visited a hotel in Oregon with secret rooms.

“What a cool concept—to be able to go into a space in which you’re kind of away from the whole rest of the world,” Said said. “There’s people here that have busy lives; they just want to get away—I thought, ‘I’m going to create that space where we can just come and migrate into that little heaven and do that.’”

Community partnerships

Dosey Doe Breakfast, BBQ and Whiskey Bar serves a full breakfast menu in addition to 16-hour slow-smoked barbecue and a selection of over 150 kinds of award-winning bourbon and whiskey.

“We have more of those than any other bars in the state of Texas,” Said said. “This is your best whiskey bar in Texas.”

Said said he enjoys partnering with different organizations in the community, such as the International Rett Syndrome Foundation.

“[Rett Syndrome] is an affliction that really only happens with infant females. And what happens is their brain just decides it’s just not going to develop anymore,” Said said. “We found out that there’s a lot of musicians that have connections— relatives or friends— that have a Rett Syndrome child.”

Dosey Doe sells photo books put together by photographer Dave Clements that are made up of photos of different musicians. All proceeds go to the International Rett Syndrome Foundation. “It’s a real honor for us,” Said said. “We love being involved in the community.”
