“Everything is homemade,” Cassaundra said. “You won’t see a box in our kitchen [besides] flour or cornmeal.”
Led by Executive Chef William Gainey, the owners said JW’s Place offers traditional Southern and soul food that is difficult to find in the Spring area, such as hot-water cornbread or liver and onions.
JW’s Place Soul Food and Barbeque serves traditional barbecue dishes, such as smoked meats and homemade barbecue sauce, as well as soul food and Southern dishes, such as oxtail and smoked catfish.
“You can’t go anywhere around us and get smoked catfish,” Jack said. “It’s a very unique [dish].”
Sides include a four-cheese macaroni and cheese, okra with tomatoes, cabbage and smoked beans. However, the menu and chef specials often change daily, and Cassaundra said they are always adding new items to the menu, such as stuffed turkey legs or gumbo during the winter. A Sunday brunch is also offered, typically serving shrimp and grits as well as chicken and waffles. The restaurant also offers keto, vegan and vegetarian options.
“I don’t want [the menu] to ever stay the same,” Cassaundra said.
For dessert, JW’s Place offers a variety of sweets, such as lemon pound cake, sweet potato pie and peach cobbler with Cassaundra’s homemade cream.
The owners of JW’s Place said they wanted to pair the food with an elegant atmosphere, providing a change from how barbecue and Southern food is traditionally served. During the evenings, the restaurant has dressed tables and live music.
“Our menu is diverse,” Cassaundra said. “One thing about our menu is we want to be soul food and barbecue, but we want to be elegant also.”
JW’s Place offers “elegant night,” or steak night, on Thursdays with live music, wine and handcrafted cocktails.
In addition, JW’s Place has a daiquiri drive-thru, live entertainment on Thursdays through Sundays, Sunday brunch, happy hour, catering services and the opportunity to rent out the location for private parties.
The owners said JW’s Place is a restaurant where everyone is welcome.
“You’re at home,” Cassaundra said. “We want to make you feel like you’re at home when you’re here.”
The owners said their plans for the future include opening the space Monday nights for wine tastings and starting “Battle of the Chefs,” an event where chefs from the Houston area could compete in a cooking competition. Opening a second location in the area is also a possibility on the horizon, according to the owners.
“We have a lot of visions for the future,” Cassaundra said.
