On May 2, the Lone Star College board of trustees unanimously agreed to purchase an additional 23 acres of land for the Corporate College Transportation Institute.
The institute currently occupies 19.73 acres in Spring. The expansion is anticipated to be complete in March 2020, according to LSC senior associate vice chancellor Linda Head.
The Corporate College Transportation Institute trains students to receive their commercial driver’s license (CDL) over the course of a six-week course. The institute also contracts with corporate clients to fast-track an employee’s training.
“We expanded it because of our new facility opening up,” Head said. “We have relationships with the airport [and the] Union-Pacific Railroad. … We have a logistics program, and we are updating all that into modern day supply logistics.”
Head said the expansion is coming about due to Houston’s location and reputation as a transportation hub.
“There’s a lot of movement of goods coming through Houston,” she said. “Truck driving is always in the top three or five occupations that go unfilled in the city.”
Head added the expansion is ready to go and is waiting on a county permit at this time.
