The city of Shenandoah held a joint meeting with its Municipal Development District June 28 to discuss the proposed capital projects and purchases for fiscal year 2023-24.

The overview

Capital improvement projects consist of projects relating to water and sewer; drainage; road projects; parks and recreation; and City Hall. As of June 28, the total funding requested for projects for 2023-24 is $2.86 million. Here are the three most expensive projects the city will invest in over the next two years.

City Hall parking replacement and police department fencing
  • Cost: $1.8 million
  • Timeline: January 2023-April 2024
  • The project: The asphalt parking lot, parking lights and drainage system for the City Hall parking lot will be replaced. The project also includes adding new parking covers for police and incorporating security fencing, cameras and a gate.
  • Benefits: The project will provide more security for loading, unloading and storage of police vehicles.
Redevelopment zone storm lines
  • Cost: $675,000
  • Timeline: October 2023-December 2023
  • The project: New stormwater collection lines will be installed in the redevelopment zone to create capacity for the storage of stormwater at Vision Park Detention Pond.
  • Benefits: This will allow for more use of the land and could become a bargaining chip for new developers, according to information at the meeting.
Oak Haven asbestos cement pipe
  • Cost: $250,000
  • Timeline: October 2023-June 2024
  • Benefits: The project entails replacement of existing asbestos cement pipe through easements in Oak Haven.
Also of note: The city of Shenandoah also discussed smaller project items during the meeting including installing a driveway connecting the Portofino Shopping Center and Home Depot, installing security cameras at Maplewood Park and purchasing new gym equipment.
