The candidate filing period for individuals to toss their name in the hat for a city council position in Oak Ridge North or Shenandoah began Jan. 17.

The deadline to file an application for a place on the May 5 general election ballot is Feb. 16.

To be a city council member or mayor, on the date of the election candidates must be at least 18 years of age, a United States citizen and a registered and a qualified voter in Texas.

The candidate must also have resided within the corporate limits of Oak Ridge North or Shenandoah for at least 1 year preceding the election and must not be in arrears in tax payments or other liabilities to the city and should not be disqualified by any provision of any section of the city code.

Oak Ridge North
In Oak Ridge North, positions up for election include Mayor, which is held by James (Jim) Kuykendahll, as well as Place 1, held by Paul Bond, and Place 3, held by Alex Jones.

To file an application in person or by mail, applications can be delivered to City Secretary/Filing Officer Elizabeth Harrell at the Oak Ridge North City Hall, located at 27424 Robinson Road, Oak Ridge North.

The office is open 7:45 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Mon.-Thu. and 8 a.m.-4 p.m.Fridays; the office is closed Sat.-Sun.

Shenandoah
This year, positions up for election in Shenandoah include Mayor, which is held by M. Ritchey (Ritch) Wheeler, as well as Position 1, held by Ron Raymaker, and Position 5, held by Michael (Mike) McLeod.

To file an application in person or by mail, applications can be delivered to Interim City Secretary/Filing Officer Courtney Clary at the Shenandoah Municipal Office, located at 19955 I-45 N., Shenandoah.

The office is open Mon.-Fri. 8 a.m.-5 p.m. and is closed Sat.-Sun.
