Oak Ridge North City Council held its first meeting of the month Monday night and unanimously approved an ordinance allowing for a new school zone and speed limit of 20 mph to be set on Maplewood and South Hillside drives.
After conducting an investigation on the need for school zones near
Vogel Intermediate School, Oak Ridge North Police Chief Andy Walters said he believes there should be zoning in the area.
"I was asked to do an investigation on the need for school zoning on Maplewood Drive and South Hillside Drive," he said. "It was brought about by concerns for children who are walking on Maplewood Drive since we have no sidewalks and our traffic has picked up considerably. Plus the bus barn is down there and buses are pouring out. I think it would be prudent to put up a school zone."
Walters said the new school zone will consist of school zone signs, stop signs and crosswalk markings on the street.
"We need to let people know this is a school zone and not just a bunch of kids walking on the streets," Walters said. "It's not a good idea to mix people and cars."
Although the ordinance was passed, the council has not yet determined with the school zone will be implemented.
