The Woodlands Township Chairman Gordy Bunch announced during a press conference Wednesday the Labor Day Celebration scheduled for Sept. 3 would be cancelled in light of Hurricane Harvey’s recent destruction to the Texas coast.
Bunch said the decision was made to allow volunteers to dedicate more time to hurricane relief efforts locally and in the Greater Houston area.
“We are going to be cancelling this weekend’s Labor Day celebrations,” Bunch said. “We think that in the current condition that the greater community is in, that we need our folks that are able to volunteer and focus on our neighbors to spend their energy and effort there. We will resume normal celebrations when we get past this disaster event.”
A statement on the Township's website also stated the decision was made because, "although the severe weather in The Woodlands area has subsided, the Township has shifted into recovery mode and remains focused on assessing and repairing storm damage in its facilities throughout The Woodlands."
The free, annual event was supposed to take place from 4-9 p.m. Sept. 3 at Waterway Square and feature live music, children’s activities, entertainers and a firework display.
