Ten months after its launch, dockless bicycle company Mobike has ceased operations in the Woodlands, The Woodlands Township reported today. The environmentally friendly bike-sharing program utilized GPS, a smart lock system and a smartphone app to allow riders to reserve, locate and park bicycles at their convenience within the Town Center limits. According to The Woodlands Township data, there were 100 Mobikes in The Woodlands, and a total of 10,517 rides had taken place from January to August. John Powers, assistant general manager for community services, said Mobike representatives had made no official announcement and had not been in touch with the Woodlands Township, preferring instead to quietly phase themselves out over the past two months. “They slowly removed the bikes; the bikes stopped showing up on people’s apps,” Powers said. The cost of renting a Mobike was $1 for the first 30 minutes; the rider had the option of signing up for a membership or paying another $1 to continue riding. Powers said each month since the January launch had shown an increase in ridership. “The last data report was for August,” Powers said. “There were 1,665 activated Mobike apps in the month of July; by August there were 2,425.” The township is seeking replacement services. “We’re going to demo some [stationless bicycle companies] in the next few weeks; hopefully we can bring something for consideration by the end of the year,” Powers said.
