Thy and Christopher Nguyen opened Focus Optical in late 2016 to offer both luxury retail and personalized eye care services for residents in The Woodlands.
Thy said while she has been a practicing optometrist for over six years, the optometry office in Hughes Landing is her and her husband’s first practice.
“Optometry is a great field in that you are able to significantly help people with their vision and make an impact in their lives,” Thy said. “We wanted to open our own store because we felt like there was a need in The Woodlands for a personal kind of service and care.”
Christopher said once the couple moved to The Woodlands eight years ago from Houston, they noticed a more personable optometry office like Focus Optical was needed in the community.
“We came up here to The Woodlands, and we thought that there was a place that was missing where customers can come and experience the actual retail side of looking and shopping, and then also see[ing] a doctor and get[ting] an exam,” he said. “Overall, we wanted to tailor a nice experience for anyone who walks through, whether it is for an annual exam or just browsing for new glasses.”
Optometry services at Focus Optical include comprehensive eye exams, contact lens fittings and bifocal contact fittings. The optometry office also offers orhokeratology—the creation of gas-permeable contact lenses for wearers with astimatism—and LASIK, which is a type of laser eye surgery.
Thy said the patient experience at Focus Optical—from the eye exams to helping customers pick out frames—is what makes the office unique in the community.
“Our variety of brands and the experience patients have here is what makes us unique more than anything,” Thy said. “That has been our highest compliment from our patients and customers. You don’t have to sit in the waiting room for 30 minutes, and we tailor our schedule and how we do things for the patient. Our check-in process is also very streamlined, and we’re paperless, so we’re pretty proud of that.”
Besides offering eye exams and contact fittings for customers, Thy said the variety of luxury frames and sunglasses for adults and children brings in new clients from all over the Greater Houston area.
“We have a wide selection of brands because glasses are actually a really important part of who you are since that’s the first part of you people see,” she said. “We have the only collection of Chanel frames in the North Houston area, so we have people from Galveston coming in for those. We try to have a lot of styles and variety because everyone is different, and hopefully your personality can come out in the pair of glasses that you find here.”
Other eyewear brands that Focus Optical carries include Tom Ford, Prada, Maui Jim, Ray-Bans, Dita and Oliver Peoples.
After nearly two years of business in The Woodlands, the Nguyens said they have plans to open a new Focus Optical location by the end of the year off Kirby Drive and Westheimer Road in Houston.
“I think residents should still know that we are local, we live here and this is our community,” Christopher said. “It’s important that you have things available in the community, and this community is different from others. People don’t need to drive far to get what they want.”
