The Woodlands Arts Council announced plans to move forward with Phase 3 of The Woodlands Art Bench Project and add four to six new art benches in Hughes Landing that will be completed by late 2018 or early 2019.
The Woodlands Art Bench Project, which first started off as eight unique benches located throughout The Woodlands in 2014, currently consists of 14 benches located on or near The Woodlands Waterway.
TWAC President Amy Lecocq said she believes The Woodlands Art Bench Project is a unique venture, and possible sites have already been identified for the future art benches in Hughes Landing.
"The whole project is unique," she said. "There is no other art bench project like it, and each bench is a unique piece of art. We have a couple dozen spots picked out at Hughes Landing, and the underwriters will choose the final spots for their benches."
Theresa Terrell, chairman of the Art Bench Committee, said artists from all over the country and the world submit designs to be chosen for the art benches.
"In the past, artists from Europe and South America as well as Texas and other states have been selected to create the art benches,” Terrell said. “The art benches artistically combine form and function, and are a great place for people to sit and enjoy The Woodlands’ natural environment. Individuals or businesses underwriting an art bench will be able to make the final selection from three designs screened by the Art Bench Committee."
The deadline for underwriting an art bench in this third phase is July.
