Indie pop-rock band Carthy, composed of brothers Chase, Drew and Seth Karl, formed in The Woodlands about three years ago.

After working for two years on its latest five-track record, “L.A. Bound,” which was released in June, the group has weekly shows lined up, beginning with a performance at the Dosey Doe Big Barn on April 12.

“There’s so many people that have played [the Big Barn],” Chase said. “I’ve seen a couple of shows there myself. As a musician, it sounds so good in there.”

Carthy’s sound on “L.A. Bound” is influenced by artists from multiple generations, such as The Beatles, Queen, John Denver, Paul Simon, Jack White, The Killers, Coldplay, Lorde and Twenty One Pilots, the band said.

“It’s really cool live when we perform those five songs because they go together really well,” Chase said. “We always close with ‘L.A. Bound,’ and it’s this really cool moment when the audience feels really connected.”

Chase has been a musician for several years, and Drew said he originally learned to play guitar so he could play John Denver songs. Seth learned to play bass guitar two weeks before the band was to play a show at Texas A&M University.

“The more we play, the more of a fan base we get and more opportunities that we are having to play,” Drew said.

The songwriting process for each brother is completely different.

“Lyrics are what’s most important to me,” Drew said. “I’ll usually think of a lyrical concept a lot of times if I’m reading something. Then, I’ll build the melody and see how the lyrics flow and go from there.”

Sometimes one person will have an idea that lends itself to collaboration to create a full song, Chase said.

“I had a verse written out, and I took it to rehearsal,” Seth said. “Everyone else got on board.”

Performing as brothers creates a family-like atmosphere that is also relatable for the audience, Chase said.

“It’s kind of fun for the audience,” Chase said. “I think most people feel like they’re sitting at their own kitchen table listening to their siblings fight.”
