The gist
At a March 17 meeting, Missouri City City Council approved a $7.2 million contract with Brooks Concrete Inc. for sidewalk and street repairs throughout the city.
Public Works Director Shashi Kumar said the cost will be covered by various budgets including:
- $3 million from the Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County
- $4 million from the city’s general fund
- $200,000 from the city’s capital improvement program
More than $6 million will be used for streets managed by the city, with over $2.42 million allocated for projects in District A and nearly $1.7 million for projects in District D, according to agenda documents. The road repairs are taking place in neighborhoods across the city, including in Water Brook, Quail Run and Bradford Village. The contract will also fund $1 million in sidewalk repairs, with over half of the funding going to District C, per agenda documents.Additionally, $200,000 will be used for sidewalk projects in Hunters Glen Park and Ridgeview Park, according to agenda documents.
Looking back
Missouri City officials committed $5.3 million for street repairs and $991,460 for sidewalk repairs in fiscal year 2023-24 after an October 2020 citywide infrastructure assessment showed there was an over $450 million backlog in street rehabilitation and reconstruction projects needed.
Since the study, city officials have also committed additional funding to address the backlog, including:
- Increased annual operating budget for repair and rehabilitation
- A November 2021 $85.85 million bond program focused on street reconstruction projects
- Building a reserve fund, including allocating 65% of excess fund balance to the Pavement Maintenance and Management Program
Street and sidewalk repairs are set to begin in April, with locations prioritized by need, according to agenda documents.
The contractor will have one year to complete the work, with most repairs beginning in the spring or summer, Kumar said.
