The overview
At a Jan. 7 meeting, Sugar Land City Council approved a $559,766 contract with Gauge Engineering LLC for design of the Gannoway Lake Trails. The trail will feature a 10-foot-wide path along Burney Road from Voss Road to Oyster Creek, and west along Oyster Creek to Cullinan Park, Assistant City Engineer Jonathan Braun said.
The project was initiated by former District 1 council member Steve Porter, who served from 2013 to 2021, Mayor Joe Zimmerman said.
The details
Braun said the project will also include:
- A boardwalk along Gannoway Lake’s southern edge
- Connections to Imperial Trails
- Enhanced pedestrian safety at Hwy. 6, including a new pedestrian bridge
The cost
Braun said the design and construction of the project will be funded by:
- $3.83 million from the Houston-Galveston Area Council’s Carry Over Spend Down grant program
- $800,000 from the $38.4 million Fort Bend County parks bond approved by voters in November 2020
The trail is a part of the city’s initiative to make Sugar Land a more walkable and bikable place, Melanie Beaman, Sugar Land transportation and mobility manager, previously told Community Impact. Other incoming trails projects include:
- Sugar Land Trail Phase 1, along the west side of Ditch H from Imperial Park near Matlage Way, traveling under Hwy. 59 and connecting to Phase 2 near the Smart Financial Centre
- Sugar Land Trail Phase 2, along the north side of Lexington Boulevard between the Smart Financial Centre and Austin Parkway
Going forward
The notice to proceed will be issued in January, with design completed in summer 2026, Braun said.
Construction is expected to begin in fall 2026.
