Sugar Land officials are continuing with the goal to make the city more accessible with approval of a design contract for trails near Gannoway Lake.

The overview

At a Jan. 7 meeting, Sugar Land City Council approved a $559,766 contract with Gauge Engineering LLC for design of the Gannoway Lake Trails. The trail will feature a 10-foot-wide path along Burney Road from Voss Road to Oyster Creek, and west along Oyster Creek to Cullinan Park, Assistant City Engineer Jonathan Braun said.



The project was initiated by former District 1 council member Steve Porter, who served from 2013 to 2021, Mayor Joe Zimmerman said.


The details

Braun said the project will also include:
  • A boardwalk along Gannoway Lake’s southern edge
  • Connections to Imperial Trails
  • Enhanced pedestrian safety at Hwy. 6, including a new pedestrian bridge
Design services will also include environmental clearance, geotechnical investigation and floodplain analysis, according to agenda documents.

The trail is a part of the city’s initiative to make Sugar Land a more walkable and bikable place, Melanie Beaman, Sugar Land transportation and mobility manager, previously told Community Impact. Other incoming trails projects include:
  • Sugar Land Trail Phase 1, along the west side of Ditch H from Imperial Park near Matlage Way, traveling under Hwy. 59 and connecting to Phase 2 near the Smart Financial Centre
  • Sugar Land Trail Phase 2, along the north side of Lexington Boulevard between the Smart Financial Centre and Austin Parkway


Going forward

The notice to proceed will be issued in January, with design completed in summer 2026, Braun said.

Construction is expected to begin in fall 2026.
