In order to perform a routine inspection on a pipeline in Sugar Land, Atmos Energy will flare natural gas, a process that will result in “a large controlled flame and moderate noise,” according to a press release from the natural gas company.

The flaring will occur on weekdays June 8-17 from approximately 7 a.m.-4 p.m. at the end of Elkins Road, south of University Boulevard in Sugar Land.

The Sugar Land police and fire departments, along with 911 operators and local officials have been notified, according to the release

Atmos Energy says flaring is a standard practice in the industry used to safely remove natural gas from a section of pipeline so that maintenance or other work can be performed. Residents can learn more about flaring through this informational video by Atmos Energy.
